Our Story So Far

Andy, Thomas, Andrew & Jamie

Our story begins with Andy, after working in the trade from the age of 16 and gaining a wealth of knowledge, he took the leap and started his own wholesale fish company early in the year 2000. He began  by operating out of a small unit in Salt market, Glasgow, (kindly donated rent-free by someone who believed he deserved a chance) and with his younger brother, Jamie, by his side they started supplying many of Scotland’s top hotels & restaurants in no time at all.

In July of 2003, after 3 months, an opportunity arose for Andy to take over from a retiring fishmonger at the well-established McKechnie & Sons on Scotland Street. They began to build a relationship with the many customers who flocked to the shop from all over Scotland. With two young children to care for Andy and his wife, ‘T’, put their all in to running the shop and the flourishing wholesale business, often returning to work late at night to prep for the next day.

Over the next 11 years the business continued to grow at a steady rate. Through early starts and late nights we had a reputation for high quality produce and fantastic and friendly service; customers came to see ‘the boys’ as much as they came for the fish. As time went on, more family members joined the team, Thomas, another of Andy’s brothers and Andrew & T’s son (also called Andrew!) now out of school, was eager to learn the ropes. The small cafe next door became available and we seized the chance to try something new, The Fish People Café opened in late 2012 and serves some of the finest fish Scotland has to offer.

Teresa was now running the shop full time and in 2013, daughter Laura came on board to help run things behind the scenes. By 2016 the time was right to move our wholesale operation to Blochairn market in Glasgow, giving us much needed space as we continued to grow and the ability to transform the shop into a seafood delicatessen.

The past 20 years have been incredible, through hard work and determination we have built a reputation that we are very proud of. We have customers whose families we’ve watched grow over the last two decades, who are as much a part of our journey as the people who have worked here and helped to make The Fish People who we are today.

In our 20th year, we felt the time was right to take the next steps and are now proud to offer an online delivery service, offering the same high quality produce to those all over the UK.

Here's to the next 20!
